Plastic Pollution
Plastic Pollution the facts and why should we care?
What is Plastic Pollution
Essentially it's plastic where it shouldn't be. In the ocean, on the beach and its causing serious harm to our marine life and environment. We are using more plastic than every before, mainly because its cheap to produce and durable. Current stats show that 8 million pieces of plastic enter the oceans every single day. Scary right?
What is the lifespan of plastic?
As we previously mentioned plastic is durable and strong, meaning it never really breaks down. One plastic bottle can last for 450 years! It very slowly breaks down over time into smaller pieces which eventually end up microscopic and so never truly go away.
Health Facts
1 in 3 fish caught for human consumption now contain plastic. The question is no longer are we eating plastic but how bad for us is that? In seawater plastic absorbs chemicals like PCB’s and DDT’s which have been linked to endocrine disruption and even some cancers, becoming more powerful as they work their way up the food chain.
The beach isn't just where we go to relax or spend time with friends and families for many families its their livelihood. And what good is a beach covered in plastic waste? Coastal tourism is worth £5.5 billion to the UK economy, so it is something that needs to be protected.
What can I do?
There are many ways you can cut your plastic use. Although we know it is extremely difficult to become completely plastic free there's plenty of amazing companies coming up with new and innovative products that we can easily swap for our not so friendly plastic ones! For example, toothbrushes are one of the most found items on beach cleans! Swap your plastic toothbrush for a bamboo one! Use reusable water bottles/Tupperware for your days out or everyday work use.
Join a beach clean, these are happening all over the country, it's also a great way to meet local people in your area so you might even make some new friends while your there! Win all round right?
And so much more!
What are we doing?
Here at Perky Peach we are doing our best to ensure as much plastic as possible doesn't end up in our oceans. All of our leggings are made from recycled polyethylene terephthalate which derive's from plastic bottles and packaging, by choosing this as our fabric we are ensuring that plastic is put into a reusable stylish product and not just left at landfill or in the sea. As a brand we try to avoid using any plastic packaging for our orders. All of our products are posted in either cardboard boxes or in 100% compostable mailers made from corn.
